Troubleshooting your mac

Today, my Mac got stuck, I decided to reset the PRAM and the SMC :

PRAM is the acronym of “parameter ram”, and might sometimes get corrupted.

Pram contains:

  • Status of AppleTalk
  • Serial Port Configuration and Port definition
  • Alarm clock setting
  • Application font
  • Serial printer location
  • Autokey rate
  • Autokey delay
  • Speaker volume
  • Attention (beep) sound
  • Double-click time
  • Caret blink time (insertion point rate)
  • Mouse scaling (mouse speed)
  • Startup disk
  • Menu blink count
  • Monitor depth
  • 32-bit addressing
  • Virtual memory
  • RAM disk
  • Disk cache

Note : Reseting the PRAM might affect your computer.

How to clean PRAM,

  1. Shut the computer down.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. Press Alt+ apple + R + P.
  4. wait until the beeps of your mac.
After reseting PRAM, I also decided to reset the SMC ( which stands for System Management Controller )  Information on the SMC ship can be found here, on the website of apple, some basic information can also be found below :
  • Responding to presses of the power button
  • Responding to display lid opening and closing on portable Macs
  • Battery management
  • Thermal management
  • The SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor)
  • Ambient light sensing
  • Keyboard backlighting
  • Status Indicator Light (SIL) management
  • Battery status indicator lights
  • Selecting an external (instead of internal) video source for some iMac displays

How to reset it ? :
Apple recommend the following steps :

Before Resetting the SMC

Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.

  1. Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
  2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
  3. Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
  4. Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

Finally, follow these instructions

  1. Shut  the computer down.
  2. Remove the MagSafe adapter.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Press the power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Replace the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
  6. Turn on the computer.

Done, That’s it, you rested the PRAM and the SMC.
